The UNH Hamilton Smith Hall project involved the renovation of the original portion of the building, constructed in 1907, while the 1965 addition was fully demolished and replaced with a new, state-of-the-art facility. The original building—rich in historic character—remained operational throughout construction, continuing to support active classrooms and office spaces. This phased approach required careful planning and coordination to minimize disruption to ongoing university operations.

Fitzemeyer & Tocci provided complete MEP/FP engineering services for the entire project. Both the renovated and newly constructed spaces were equipped with all-new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems, designed to ensure long-term performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort. In the original building, all systems were upgraded while preserving its architectural integrity.

Key design features included a high-efficiency displacement ventilation system for classrooms, which enhanced indoor air quality while maximizing energy savings. Advanced lighting systems with LED fixtures, daylight harvesting, and modern controls were integrated throughout the building to support both sustainability goals and user comfort.

The completed facility now includes a mix of offices, lecture halls, general classrooms, and cutting-edge Technology Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) spaces—designed to support modern teaching methods and collaborative learning environments.
