Fitzemeyer & Tocci provided MEP/FP engineering design and construction administration services for Fair Haven Community Health Care’s (FHCHC) landmark campus expansion, its first major capital project in over 50 years.
This 35,560-SF, four-story facility is fully electric and fossil-fuel-free, setting a new standard for sustainable, community-based healthcare in Connecticut. The expansion increases FHCHC’s capacity from 33,000 to more than 55,000 annual patient visits, dramatically improving access to integrated care in a historically underserved community.
The new facility includes 26 modern exam rooms, expanded behavioral health and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) areas, a community pharmacy, and dedicated spaces for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition programs and the Ryan White Program for HIV/AIDS prevention and clinical services.
Beyond clinical care, the design supports FHCHC’s holistic approach to health, addressing social determinants of health through community-focused amenities. These include a technology-enabled training room for ESL, digital health literacy, and workforce readiness; flexible program space with a demonstration kitchen for nutrition education; and infrastructure to launch FHCHC’s “Food as Medicine” initiative.
As the MEP engineer, F&T collaborated with E4H Environments for Health Architecture to deliver high-performance building systems that maximize energy efficiency, eliminate on-site fossil fuel use, and ensure long-term resilience. This climate-conscious design reflects FHCHC’s commitment to health equity, sustainability, and community empowerment.
