Building for Better Emergency Care: Commissioning the BID Plymouth Expansion

Fitzemeyer & Tocci is providing commissioning services for the multi-phase expansion and renovation of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Plymouth's Emergency Department, a transformational project designed to enhance patient care, improve operational efficiency, and expand capacity to meet the growing needs of the region. The project includes approximately 8,000 SF of new construction and 20,000 SF of renovation across five major construction phases, with construction extending through 2028.

F&T is commissioning a comprehensive range of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and controls systems, including a custom dual-tunnel air handling unit, air-cooled chiller, VAV and terminal units, heating and chilled-water systems, domestic hot water, automatic temperature controls and BMS, lighting and lighting controls, power distribution, and an emergency generator and automatic transfer switch. The commissioning scope also includes review and testing associated with medical gas, dialysis systems, fire protection, and other critical healthcare infrastructure.

This month, the project reached a major milestone with completion of the first phase of construction. The newly opened spaces include expanded exam rooms, a redesigned main lobby, and calming coastal-inspired interiors created to improve the patient experience. When fully completed in 2028, the expanded Emergency Department will more than double in size, significantly increase private treatment capacity, and provide expanded behavioral health services, positioning the hospital to better serve its growing community for years to come.
