The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical limitations in traditional hospital design, particularly the lack of flexibility to accommodate a surge of patients requiring airborne infection isolation. In response, Fitzemeyer & Tocci partnered on the Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital Inpatient Tower project to deliver an innovative, adaptable solution. By enabling standard patient rooms to convert to negative pressure environments on demand, the design enhances safety, expands surge capacity, and redefines how healthcare facilities can prepare for the unexpected.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful, forward-looking design can transform healthcare environments into flexible, resilient spaces prepared for both everyday operations and unforeseen challenges. By prioritizing adaptability, safety, and efficiency, Fitzemeyer & Tocci helped create a solution that supports patients, protects staff, and strengthens long-term hospital performance.
