Fitzemeyer & Tocci proudly provided MEP/FP engineering and construction administration for the construction of the new Inpatient Tower Addition at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. This major expansion resulted in the new five-story, 98,000-square-foot Inpatient Tower Addition, complemented by 15,700 square feet of targeted renovations to the existing facility. The project delivers 78 single-occupancy patient rooms, an expanded radiology and MRI suite, a new and enlarged endoscopy department, and an eight-bed extended recovery unit.
Designed and constructed in a tight urban setting above active hospital departments, the project required meticulous coordination to maintain 24/7 operations. F&T worked alongside NBBJ Architects, Turner Construction Company, McNamara Salvia, VHB, Legget McCall, TG Gallagher and Sullivan & McLaughlin Companies to deliver a sustainable, state-of-the-art facility that strengthens Faulkner’s capacity to serve patients and reinforces its role as a trusted community hospital.
F&T delivered an integrated engineering solution focused on performance, flexibility, and long-term value. The design leveraged the hospital’s existing cogeneration and steam boiler plant, implemented a hybrid HVAC strategy using chilled beams in patient rooms and flexible VAV systems in procedural areas, and added a high efficiency, water-cooled chilled water plant with N+1 redundancy. Electrical resiliency was enhanced through a new double-ended unit substation with dual utility feeds, while the fifth floor was designed for rapid conversion to negative pressure operation. Advanced BIM coordination, phased construction sequencing, and selective prefabrication enabled precise system integration within tight constraints, resulting in a LEED Silver–targeted facility that expands capacity, enhances patient care, and establishes a resilient foundation for the hospital’s future.
The Inpatient Tower Addition successfully meets the hospital’s vision: a facility that not only expands capacity but also enhances patient care, integrates seamlessly with existing systems, and provides a sustainable foundation for the future.
