Commissioning for the Renovation & Expansion of the Historic Melrose Public Library
Fitzemeyer & Tocci was thrilled to provide commissioning services for the renovation and expansion of the Melrose Public Library, a project that blends historic preservation, modern functionality, and sustainable design.
Revitalizing Historic Architecture
The $21 million, 28,100-SF project included the construction of a new wing, the restoration of original 1904 Carnegie building features such as historic woodwork, fireplaces, and stained-glass windows, and the replacement of a dated 1960s addition with a more accessible, light-filled entrance and addition.
A major highlight of the expansion is the transformation of the children’s room, moved from a basement space to a spacious, sunlit top-floor area with dedicated program and craft rooms. The new addition also includes a young adult area, large community meeting space, computer workstations, and comfortable seating throughout.
Achieving Sustainability with All-Electric Building Design
F&T’s commissioning scope covered mechanical, electrical, plumbing, renewable energy, and building envelope systems, ensuring all equipment and controls were installed, tested, and operating per design intent. This included reviewing design documents, developing the commissioning plan, performing functional performance testing, and verifying training and turnover for operations staff.
