Duct-Mounted Smoke Detection: Why, When, and Where?

One of the most commonly encountered (and most commonly overlooked) questions in fire alarm system design is whether an HVAC unit requires a duct-mounted smoke detector. The answer depends on the purpose of the detector, the type of HVAC equipment, and the codes adopted by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Although duct smoke detectors are an important component of many commercial HVAC systems, they are frequently misunderstood. Knowing when they are required can help designers, contractors, and building owners achieve code compliance while avoiding unnecessary costs and delays.
WHY? - Duct Smoke Detectors: Smoke Control, Not Occupant Notification
A common misconception is that duct smoke detectors are installed to detect fires early and notify building occupants. In reality, their primary purpose is to prevent the distribution of smoke through the HVAC system. Section 6.4 of NFPA 90A, Standard for the Installation of Air-Conditioning and Ventilating Systems, requires smoke detectors in air distribution systems under certain conditions to automatically stop fans and close dampers where required. The intent is to limit the movement of smoke throughout the building—not to replace required area smoke detection.
WHEN? – What Circumstances Require Duct Smoke Detection?
When it comes to when duct smoke detection is required, the International Mechanical Code (IMC) contains requirements for smoke detection associated with air-moving systems. Under the 2024 IMC, Section 606 generally requires duct smoke detectors in air-handling systems having a design capacity greater than 2,000 cubic feet per minute (CFM), subject to several important exceptions.

The 2,000 CFM Rule—With Exceptions
The "2,000 CFM rule" is widely cited, but it is not a blanket requirement.
Generally, a smoke detector is required when an air-handling unit:
Has a design airflow exceeding 2,000 CFM.
Recirculates air to multiple spaces.
Is required by the adopted mechanical code to shut down upon smoke detection.
However, several exceptions may eliminate the requirement, depending on the code edition and system design. Examples include:
HVAC units serving only a single room or single smoke compartment.
Systems protected by approved area smoke detection that accomplishes the same control function.
Other exceptions specifically identified in the adopted edition of the IMC or NFPA 90A.
Because these exceptions vary by code edition and jurisdiction, designers should review the adopted codes rather than relying solely on the airflow rating.
WHERE? In What Part Of The System Should Duct Smoke Detectors Be Installed?
Both NFPA 90A and manufacturers' installation instructions establish criteria for detector placement.
Typical installation locations include:
The supply air duct downstream of the filters.
Downstream of the supply fan.
Upstream of branch duct takeoffs whenever practical.
Locations where airflow is sufficiently uniform for accurate sampling.
What Does NFPA 72 Have To Say?
While NFPA 90A and the IMC establish when duct smoke detectors are required, NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, governs how they are installed, monitored, tested, and interconnected with the fire alarm system.
NFPA 72 addresses topics including:
Installation methods.
Circuit supervision.
Functional testing.
Inspection and maintenance.
Signal processing by the fire alarm control unit.
One important point often misunderstood is that NFPA 72 does not require duct smoke detector activation to initiate a general building fire alarm evacuation signal unless another code or the system design specifically requires it.
Instead, duct smoke detectors typically perform one or more of the following functions:
Shut down HVAC equipment.
Generate a supervisory signal at the fire alarm control unit.
Annunciate the detector location for responding personnel.
Initiate smoke control sequences where applicable.
The exact system response should be coordinated with the mechanical engineer and designed in accordance with the adopted codes.
Coordination Between Disciplines Is Essential
Proper application of duct smoke detectors requires coordination among multiple design disciplines.
The mechanical engineer determines:
HVAC configuration.
Fan shutdown requirements.
Smoke control sequences.
The fire protection engineer or fire alarm system designer determines:
Fire alarm system interface.
Signal type.
Monitoring requirements.
Control logic.
Early coordination helps eliminate unnecessary devices while ensuring all required life safety functions are provided.
